Wendy-Lane Bailey: Artist Profile

All About Solo's Editorial Team recently caught up with Wendy-Lane Bailey, star of Remembering My Dreams: The Michele Brourman Songbook, to learn about her journey through the world of solo theatre.

Tickets are available for Remembering My Dreams: The Michele Brourman Songbook on March 17, March 31, April 3, and April 9 at 7:00 pm at United Solo's 20th Annual Solo Theatre Festival at Theatre Row in New York City.

Why Solo Theatre?

Solo Theatre, for me, is the ultimate challenge. You can create whatever you want using whatever artistic tools you have. There are no limits here. It is alternately exhilarating and terrifying. You are on your own in the very best way possible. It has given me the confidence that I can do anything - all I have to do is take the leap.

Describe your show in 6 words:

One song can change the world

What drew you to Michele Brourman’s music?

Michele is that rare songwriter that appeals to both the heart and the head. She has a dazzling intellect, but also a deep emotional intelligence and compassion. That is irresistible to an actor.

You describe yourself as a Singer/Actor. Which came first for you?

I could sing before I could talk. The music was always there, but I decided I wanted to be a “Serious Actor," and headed off to NYC with the intention of doing just that. Along the way, I discovered I didn’t have to choose. The best-written songs are complete plays in themselves and offer great challenges for an actor, and the best-written plays have a rhythm all their own. Each part of me strengthens the other parts, and I use what I’ve learned from both, no matter what I’m working on.

How do the songs in this show illuminate our current world?

Some of the songs were written very recently, and others were from well before, but all of them speak to the place we find ourselves in as empathetic, aware humans. They address life, lies, love, dreams, and finding hope even in the most difficult places. They inspire me (and I hope the audience) to transcend the things that weigh us down - fear, loss, the past -and have the courage to step into the unknown to create something extraordinary, whether it’s the world, your community, or your own life.
