Rosemary Loar: Artist Profile

All About Solo's Editorial Team recently caught up with Rosemary Loar, star of Three Sisters Jersey Edition, to learn about her journey through the world of solo theatre.

Tickets are available for Three Sisters Jersey Edition on April 4 at 7:00 pm at United Solo's 20th Annual Solo Theatre Festival at Theatre Row in New York City.

What drew you to creating a solo musical?

When I started clearing out my dearly departed sister's home, there were so many incidents that were both hilarious and heartbreaking, and I knew I had to create something out of my grief and, frankly, the drudgery of the process. I have written two other musicals, and those had casts of many. I knew in my gut this had to be more intimate and personal, and a solo show fulfills both functions.

Describe your show in 6 words

Completing my dearly departed sister's journey.

Family provides the base for this story. How have the people in your life influenced your writing?

Coming from a family of nine was an amazing source of inspiration and material for my storytelling. My father was always singing around the house (very beautifully, I might add), and my sister, Maureen, was a gifted artist; both gave me permission to find my source of creativity. Also, we are of Irish descent, and the Irish are great storytellers. Being raised in the Catholic faith by nuns and priests was also very influential in how I report on the world.

The show is a mix of musical genres, choreographic styles, with a little bit of audience sing-along. How do you harmonize so many disparate elements into a cohesive whole? What is the thread that ties it all together?

Yes, there is a mix of musical genres. That was the easiest part of this process.  As I am a composer of many different styles of music, ranging from jazz to pop to rock to musical theatre, I own all these styles. I am a trained dancer, so I can't help but add that element. As I have performed cabaret shows in venues all over the world for over 40 years, sing-alongs are always a way to engage the audience and get them on your team. And finally, the thread that ties it all together: My love of storytelling and entertaining people at the same time.

What is your vision for this show going forward?

My vision going forward is taking the show to fringe and solo festivals and to small theatres in the area.
