Mother’s Day is a solo performance that explores the joys, challenges, and unexpected turns of motherhood through a blend of storytelling, humor, and emotional reflection. Susan Chase takes the audience through various stages of her life, offering candid insights into her family, identity, and the shifting roles that come with being both a mother and a daughter.
With warmth and an inviting presence, she shares moments that resonate deeply, some of which are about love, loss, and the complicated ties that bind families together. The show strikes a balance between levity and sincerity, finding humor in everyday chaos while also acknowledging the struggles and vulnerabilities that shape mothers and their relationships.
Chase is a powerful performer who brings a strong presence to the stage. There are moments where her energy and commitment shine. At the same time, the performance suffers from a lack of consistency. The shifts between drama and comedic teasing feel disconnected, and the delivery often becomes overly animated, which creates distance rather than drawing the audience in. The show contains impactful elements but would benefit from more grounded, cohesive choices.
The piece is structured with clarity and intention, weaving together past and present in a way that highlights the intersection of memory, experience, and growth. It’s an intimate and thoughtful performance that celebrates resilience, connection, and the profound complexities of motherhood.
Overall, Mother’s Day is moving and relatable, offering a story that many will recognize and feel a connection.
