ElephantWoman

“ElephantWoman” unfolds as a journey through Africa, love, grief, and admiration, anchored by a commanding performance from Megan Metrikin. She delivers a portrayal that is powerful, restrained, and emotionally layered, one that quietly shocks through its honesty rather than force.

The opening image, evoking the internal aggression of elephants, sets the tone for a piece that explores both the natural world and the human damage inflicted upon it. The show draws attention to the modern oppression faced by elephants, sanctuaries, and the wild, while also grappling with the complexity of telling such stories at a high emotional and aesthetic level. At times, the work exists in a limbo between documentary and poetic expression, but that tension feels intentional rather than unresolved.

What gives the piece its deepest weight is its intimacy. Beyond the realities of poaching and conservation, the show documents the lives of those who sought change, captured through photographs and stories passed down within a family. The narrative of fatherhood is especially affecting and leaves much of the audience visibly moved.

The lighting and sound design by director Simon Fortin and associate director River Knight is largely dynamic and immersive, shaping the emotional rhythm of the piece with care. There are moments, however, when the lighting feels underdeveloped, including an unintended blackout that briefly suggests the performance has ended prematurely. While distracting, it does little to diminish the overall impact.

Set inside a church, the space becomes part of the experience. Once seated, it is impossible not to feel drawn into the hour that follows. From the first line to the final bow, Metrikin, Fortin, and Knight present a work of striking sincerity and ambition.

“ElephantWoman” is a bold and moving addition to the New York theatre scene, blending awareness, artistry, and grief into a piece that lingers long after the lights go down.
