Seeing a production this clever and theatrical is genuinely showstopping. I have not stopped thinking about how carefully constructed this play is. I did not want “Dear John” to end. Directed by Tara Elliot and performed by Rachel Lin, the piece stands out as a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience.
From the start, the level of talent behind the show is evident. The set design by Zhuosi “Joyce” He is particularly striking. For a solo show, the environment feels unusually expansive and detailed, shifting the audience through multiple rooms and moments in time. The design captures the texture of the 2010s and helps ground the story in a recognizable world.
The play moves through different stages of life, beginning in the uncertainty of post graduation and continuing into the complicated self-discovery that defines adulthood in the twenty-first century. The writing is thoughtful and often funny, creating a story that will resonate with anyone still trying to understand who they are and where they belong.
There were a few technical hiccups during the performance, including a moment where the actor briefly broke character. Even so, the strength of the production never disappeared. The overall craft of the show remained clear, and it feels like a piece that could easily grow into something even stronger.
The technical team plays a major role in shaping the evening. Sound design by Minjae Ki, projections by Ein Kim, and lighting by Yang Yu work together seamlessly to support the narrative. Costume design by Phuong Nguyen adds another thoughtful layer, capturing small cultural details of the era, including the unmistakable statement necklace.
At the center of it all is Rachel Lin. Her performance is raw, fearless, and deeply committed. She brings a remarkable emotional range to the role and carries the entire production with confidence. Even with the technical challenges of an early run, her performance feels fully realized.
“Dear John” is a bold and heartfelt piece of theatre. It is an adventure worth experiencing and a production that deserves a wide audience. Highly recommended.
