A Master Class with Zishan Ugurlu, Resident Artist at La MaMa and Professor at The New School, NYC

United Solo will present a Master Class with Zishan Ugurlu, resident actress and director at La MaMa and professor at The New School. This is an exciting opportunity to work with an admired actress whose work has been seen throughout New York and abroad. This master class will help you hone the necessary skills to stand alone and perform. Paradoxically, the most personal experiences are also the most universal. Embracing vulnerability and working with our profound truths is precisely what inspires others and allows for genuine relationships that connect us all. In this class, students will be coached on their prepared monologues in front of their peers and engage in various exercises that will improve their understanding of solo performance fundamentals. Participants must come prepared with a monologue of their choosing.

“As an actor, director, and educator, I hope to inspire theater makers to flirt with fear in their attempts to make the invisible visible, and I use Andrey Tarkovsky’s description of an artistic discovery as a mantra: ‘An artistic discovery occurs each time as a new and unique image of the world, a hieroglyphic of absolute truth. It appears as a revelation, as a momentary, passionate wish to grasp intuitively and at a stroke all the laws of this world-its beauty and ugliness, its compassion and cruelty, its infinity and its limitations’” —Zishan Ugurlu

Zishan Ugurlu is a resident actress and director at La MaMa Theater and has worked extensively both in New York and abroad. She has performed in numerous productions with Great Jones Repertory Company, including Panorama, directed by Italian company Motus as part of The Under The Radar Festival 2018. Acting solo performances include the world premiere of Dario Fo’s Peasant’s Bible, Dante in Dante, and Antigone. As a director, she is currently working on two projects: Music Room by John Runowicz about the prison system in America and working with formerly incarcerated individuals and Fragments, Lists, and Lacuna written by Alexandra Chasin and featuring Judith Butler.
