Josh Glanc: Family Man

Comedic brilliance with just enough extremity to jolt you upright in your seat. That is the energy Josh Glanc brings to “Family Man,” one of the quirkiest and most unexpectedly hilarious premieres of the year.

The show begins with cornball music and a tone that feels almost wholesome. Within minutes, that innocence fractures into something far stranger and far funnier. Glanc is fearless on the mic and with his sound cues, leaning into absurdity without ever apologizing for it. He does not wallow in sentiment or drag the audience into gloom. Instead, he builds a playground.

There is a clear nod to early children’s television programming, but warped for adults. Imagine Saturday morning cartoons rerouted through a mischievous mind. The silly songs and exaggerated characters remain, but the skits are no longer innocent. The comparison to Avenue Q is not misplaced, though Glanc’s sensibility is even more anarchic.

What makes “Family Man” land is Glanc’s ability to wrangle the audience. He escalates each segment with confidence, pushing the structure toward something almost metatheatrical. The show feels less like a solo performance and more like a solo room, with the crowd pulled directly into the chaos. Banter, camera loops, paper ripping, and rebellious physical bits stack on top of each other in a carefully orchestrated farce.

In the middle of the madness, there is a strange clarity. The comedy is bizarre, but it makes sense. Glanc explores the idea of being a man built on laughs, refusing to leave any subject untouched. By the time the evening ends with a group photo of the mess created, the audience feels complicit in the joy.

“Family Man” is a wild ride, full of belly laughs and tear streaked faces. A clever, unpredictable, and thoroughly entertaining night out.
