#40sandsingle – The Secrets to Finding LOOOOVE!!!

Joyce opens the evening with a song that sets an earnest tone, singing about dreaming hearts, hope, faith, and belief in being found. From there, the show leans heavily into the idea of destiny as we learn that Joyce was raised in a strict household and somehow became a relationship expert. Whether this is fact or fiction remains unclear, and that ambiguity becomes both a feature and a flaw of the piece.
Joyce openly admits she is a confusing soul, a sentiment that mirrors the structure of the show itself. The comedic moments land, especially when she acknowledges her own contradictions, but the through line is difficult to track. She frequently breaks the fourth wall, positioning the audience as participants in a love symposium, with Joyce as the self appointed dating guru guiding us through songs, meditations, and reflections on love as life’s highest priority.
The concept has charm and moments of genuine warmth, but it lacks cohesion. The shifting tone and unclear stakes make it hard to fully invest in the journey. With more focus, sharper storytelling, and a clearer distinction between persona and narrative, the piece could find stronger footing.
There is something here worth developing. With work and finesse, this show could grow into a more confident and compelling exploration of love and belief.
