Bhupi Sherchan's poem, "Galat Lagcha Malai Mero Deshko Itihas" or "I Think My Country's History is a Lie," is brought to life through a mesmerizing artistic performance by Raj Kumar Pudasaini. His striking movements and accompanying recitations are hypnotic. From pulsing to screaming, writhing to dancing, Pudasaini is impossible to look away from.
His performance feels similar to a modern dance of sorts; wrapped completely in white, he draws the audience in with his physical prowess. The accompanying projections and staging add to Pudasaini's movement and elevate the performance. Even though the entire show is performed in Nepali, the language barrier between the performer and audience does nothing to hinder the experience; in fact, it enhances it.
Though Serchan's poem was written in the 1960s, Pudasaini's performance, directed by Rose Schwietz, feels resonant and contemporary in its presentation. United Solo is always honored to have international and experimental art as a part of the festival. Galat Lagcha Malai Mero Deshko Itihas was an enthralling addition to the season.
