“Edward” is a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience, written and performed by Ed Schmidt, that attempts to reframe what storytelling can be. The structure is fluid, almost interchangeable, with the sense that the order and emphasis of events could shift from night to night. That flexibility gives the piece a magical quality, as if the story is being rediscovered in real time.
Schmidt’s performance is emotionally powerful and technically impressive. He never falters. The lines are delivered with clarity and conviction, even when the narrative itself becomes difficult to track. His acting anchors the evening, especially in moments that pay homage to grief and longing.
The story follows Edward, a man shaped by dreams and haunted by the death of his sister. It unfolds as a poetic meditation rather than a thriller, rich in language but often challenging to follow. Themes surface and then disappear without being revisited, creating a sense of constant attentiveness that can slip into confusion. There are stretches where the lack of narrative momentum makes it difficult to stay fully engaged.
At its core, “Edward” is also a story about passion for education and literature. Edward’s devotion to teaching English and sharing stories in the classroom adds an instructional undercurrent to the piece. It feels personal, almost biographical, and offers life lessons for those who value learning and introspection.
Despite its inconsistencies, the dedication behind the work is undeniable. Schmidt’s preparation and command of the material evoke a sense of theatre in its purest form. “Edward” may not be easy to follow, but it is clearly a labor of love and a unique entry into the solo theatre landscape.
