Dianna Dynamic - Memoirs of a Cyborg

When one steps on stage with arms wide open appearing in a shimmering ensemble of sleek silver and vibrant variegation with a rejuvenating welcome to the audience, one should expect a stellar show. Bernadette Cranage delivered just that with her one-woman spectacle Dianna Dynamic - Memoirs of a Cyborg.
Packed with ambitious humor, energetic physicality, and poetically resplendent dialogue, this show was a buzz from start to finish and left an impact on my first-time experience witnessing Cranage’s theatrical marvel. Hailing all the way from Australia, Cranage sure brought a powerful piece of live performance all the way from The Land Down Under to New York City’s iconic Theatre Row on 42nd Street.
One of the most enjoyable delights of the production was getting to see Cranage’s absolute powerhouse ability to present personable presence and wicked acting versatility to her show’s character human-cyborg miscellany Dianna Dynamic. I was awestruck by Cranage’s pristine use of charismatic vocality and quick wit during the first half of the show as we follow Dianna’s dedicated pursuit of perfection as she tries valiantly to conform to a dystopian future world of technological prominence.
What really takes the cake however, is Dianna Dynamic - Memoirs of a Cyborg’s second half where things get a bit more serious in the best of ways! Cranage absolutely triumphed in her linguistic prowess, delivering a heartfelt soliloquy packed with gorgeous illustration and instrumental personification. Dianna comes to realize that her imperfect humanity is most important above all else within the severed particles of her apathetic, mechanical hellscape she longs to find freedom from. Cranage beautifully describes humanity as a “garden” a fortress of connection; the “fragments of time” falling about her person like the calm ashes dealt after a revolutionary burst. It was some of the most beautiful writing I have witnessed in a solo show and I only wish the set design was a bit more elevated to include some accompanying imagery to such elegant wording!
Cranage certainly has the potential to excel in the genre of solo performance, and I can only imagine what she’ll do next as her and her “fearfully and wonderfully made” Dianna Dynamic storms the future of theatre proving that impassioned empathy is triumphant in the face of cold oblivion.
