10 Wigs & a Telephone

Both funny and foul, writer and perfromer Trina Colon’s one woman show 10 Wigs & a Telephone drags the audience into her world and demands their full attention until the final bow.

Opening with the main character Frankie revealing her dirty secret to the audience (spoiler: she’s a banker) the show follows Frankie’s life path from growing up with a withholding father to turning to sex work to pay her way through college to navigating the sexist world of banking. Along the way, Ms. Colon introduces her audience to Frankie’s gang of companions; anxiety, ADD, and OCD, a destructive trio that Frankie must contend with amid her already difficult life.

While 10 Wigs & a Telephone generally explores the similarities between two of the world’s oldest and most reviled professions (banking and sex work) with a sense of sarcastic and saccharine levity there are several moments of stark realism where Colon's Frankie relays horrifying experiences from her life.

The presentation of these stories stands in such contrast from the overall light-hearted tone of the show that it makes their impact hit even harder. On that topic, many trigger warnings are necessary for this show as it either contained or alluded to domestic violence, mental health disorders, sexual acts, sexual violence, human trafficking, pregnancy loss, medical complications, drug use, addiction, and of course very dirty language.

As far as recommendations, I would say Trina Colon’s 10 Wigs & a Telephone is definitely worth a watch. The topics and themes the show explores (like the different spaces where women are revered or rejected for holding power) are worthy of your time and will leave you thinking. While it may take a few minutes to get fully engaged by the end, this show will have you captivated.
